Description about Uttapam:

The Uttapam is a healthy breakfast recipe from South Indian cuisine. The Uttapam is prepared with a common rice and urad dal batter which is used to preparing Idli and dosa. However, Uttapam is little thicker and is topped with many kinds of vegetables like onion, tomato, capsicum, carrot, green chilli, sweet corn etc. these all vegetables makes it even more healthier and tastier.

The Uttapam is also look like vegetable Pizza. According to idli and dosa recipes, you can prepare Rice and Urad Dal batter in advance and use it over multiple days to make delicious Uttapam in just 20 minutes for the breakfast. Today we are going to learn about how to prepare and cook healthy Uttapam, so let's start.........

Required items to prepare Uttapam:

1.    4 cups Idli Batter or Dosa Batter

2.    2 medium chopped Onion

3.    1 cup chopped Capsicum

4.    1 cup chopped Tomato

5.    4-6 chopped green chilies

6.    Oil for shallow frying

7.    Salt according to taste

Time taken to prepare Uttapam:

1.    Preparation Time: 15 Minutes

2.    Cooking Time: 25 Minutes

Procedure to prepare Uttapam:

First of all you ahve to prepare the batter at home by following this recipe or as you know, and also you can buy readymade batter from the grocery store. Now add salt according to test and also add some water in batter and mix properly.

Remember the batter should be slightly thicker than dosa batter and slightly thinner than idli batter. Now its time to making heat of cast iron tava or non-stick tawa with medium flame. After getting hot add few drops of oil on hot tawa and spread it using a halved potato or a halved small onion. 

This process helps spreading of batter and also prevents it from sticking. Repeat the same process before making each Uttapam. When tawa is ready, pour one ladle batter and spread it in round shape by gently rotating the ladle in clockwise or anti-clockwise direction.

Make sure that batter spread is slightly thicker than a batter spread for Dosa. Now sprinkle 2-3 tablespoons chopped onion and 2-3 tablespoons chopped capsicum over it. Afterthat sprinkle 2 tablespoon chopped tomato and chopped green chilies over it also. Now its time to press the all vegetables over it with gently with the help of spatula. 

Drizzle 2-teaspoon oil around the edge and cook it for approx. 3-4 minutes until color of the bottom surface turns into light golden brown. Now flip it gently and cook another side for a minute or until the bottom surface looks cooked.

Afterthat transfer it to a plate and repeat the same process for remaining batter for making Uttapam. Finally the Uttapam is ready to serve, you can serve it with coconut chutney, tomato onion chutney or green chutney.
